Vietnam capture of two Americans prompts border clash probe

Thai and International Red Cross officials investigated the reported capture of two American photographers and two Red Cross staff by Vietnamese troops near Nong Chan refugee camp on the Thai-Cambodian border. Vietnamese forces clashed with Free Khmer guerrillas as mortar fire hit the Thai camp, while Thai authorities said Vietnamese troops were largely out of Thai territory. The border fighting continued as Bangkok sought increased U.S. military aid and an arms airlift for Thailand.

Israel expands security grip on West Bank amid autonomy talks

Israeli forces intensified searches in the occupied West Bank after militants attacked a bus bound for Ariel and killed intelligence agent Moshe Golan. The plan for post autonomy security would place troops outside Arab cities with authority to move in, aiming to block outside attacks and deter terrorist activity.
