Melton Nominated for Odessa Mayor After Hext Funeral

Following the funeral for Odessa Mayor Bill Hext, the City Council nominated mayor pro tem Larry Melton to serve as mayor. The vote will occur at the July 10 meeting after a brief closed session. City Council Reverses Smoking Ordinance Amendments

Odessa Mayor Bill Hext Remembered in 2001 Funeral Rites

Bill Hext born in Pampa Texas served in the Marine Corps from 1957 to 1965 and became Odessa’s mayor from 2000 to 2001. He died June 20 2001 at age 61 after a career including founding Petroleum Expendable Products Inc and forming Heritage FLP and the Hext Family Foundation. His funeral at Sunset Memorial Gardens included pallbearers and tributes from family and friends. Kay Murry his sister donated bone marrow during cancer treatment in Seattle.

Odessa teen led identity theft ring busted by OPD and FBI

Police arrested 17 year old James Robert Johnston in Odessa with four other suspects in an identity theft ring. Investigators say the group burglarized homes to collect credit card numbers and Social Security details, then used the data to assume victims identities. Most ring members are UT Permian Basin students. authorities say the scheme left a detectable trail.

Father plans to honor his five children funeral

Russell Yates prepared to deliver the eulogy for his five children found dead, a day after his wife Andrea was jailed without bond for drowning them. Visitation was set for Tuesday as Yates recalled his 7-year-old son winning a one on one basketball game shortly before the tragedy.
