Water Board Hears Opposition To Toledo Bend Dam Project
The State Board of Water Engineers heard opposition to the Toledo Bend Dam and reservoir on the Sabine River 23 miles northeast of Newton. Proponents cited feasibility studies and funding plans, while opponents warned of costs, land loss, and effects on local jobs. If built, the reservoir would span 100 miles, hold 4.477 million acre feet of water, and cover about 181000 acres across Texas and Louisiana, including 35000 forest acres. Project cost estimated at 54 million dollars with 30 million from the two states and the remainder from revenue bonds.
