Migrant workers tested for hantavirus in New Mexico

Biochemist Colleen Jonsson of New Mexico State University leads a study testing migrant and agricultural workers for hantavirus exposure this summer in southern New Mexico. About 270 people have been tested in Columbus Derry Arrey and Hatch with a goal of at least 500 by August. The virus, carried by rodents, is often fatal and peaks in summer months. The 1993 Navajo reservation outbreak spurred this research, tied to deer mouse populations following heavy rains.
