Beckford Beats Budd In Ulster Games 3000m
American miler Darlene Beckford clocked 8:58.40 to win the 3000 meters at the Ulster Games in Belfast, beating Britain's Zola Budd by about 16 seconds. Budd suffered her first ever defeat in Ireland after a five month layoff, while Steve Ovett won a slow paced mile and Willie Banks claimed the triple jump title with 55 feet 5 inches. Beckford later said she never intended to run the 3000, and Budd planned to run the 1500 next in Gateshead. Budd, a recent British citizen, faced mixed reactions as she resumes competition after the Los Angeles Olympics ascent.
