A state district judge in Longview rules jurors cannot hear testimony from two state investigators called by the prosecution. The defendants from Texas Oklahoma and Louisiana face charges of organized crime for stealing oil from storage tanks and selling it to refineries above legal limits.
Washington AP The House Interior Committee approved a compromise bill 34 to 7 to ban oil and gas drilling in America’s wilderness areas. The measure follows Interior Secretary Watt’s demand for Congress changes to federal wilderness protection laws to avoid mineral leasing. Watt had imposed a one year moratorium on lease approvals while Congress debated changes.
Texaco U S A reports a significant oil finding 12 miles west of Point Conception in the Santa Barbara Channel. Two wells tested at about 4 200 and 3 000 barrels per day, in 788 and 891 feet of water, on the Hueso tract leased from the Interior Department in 1979. Companies Texaco Pennzoil Sun Exploration Koch Exploration hold stakes totaling 100 percent. Production expected in three to four years with platform design underway. Texaco already operates Habitat gas platform near Carpinteria.
