GOP senators propose Social Security funding shift bill

A group of Senate Republicans introduced a bill to halt spending the Social Security surplus and to credit about 170 billion dollars into workers retirement accounts via marketable Treasury bonds. The move would inflate the reported federal deficit while keeping focus on overhauling Social Security as Democrats deem the idea dead for now. President Bush promoted the plan at a high school with Ben Stein, saying the effort continues.

Senate vs House Bills on Energy Policy and Arctic Refuge

The Senate bill weighs 16 billion in cost with 18 billion in tax incentives offset by 4.3 billion in new energy taxes aimed at conservation and renewables, plus loan guarantees for clean coal and carbon capture. It calls for an offshore energy inventory and includes no Arctic refuge provisions. The House bill offers 8.1 billion in tax breaks over a decade, mainly for fossil fuels and utilities, and approves oil drilling in Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge WR.

Senate advances broad energy bill with leaner fuel standards

The Senate nearing final approval of a sweeping national energy package backed by $18 billion in tax incentives, focusing on conservation and alternative fuels. A bid to raise auto fuel economy to 40 mpg over ten years failed 67-28, with an industry-friendly amendment guiding future standards. The measure adds $1 billion over four years to aid states with offshore oil and gas activity for coastal restoration.
