Appointment of openly gay clergyman roils Norway church
Oslo clergy vote 4-3 to appoint Jens Torstein Olsen as chaplain at Majorstue Church despite 1997 church rule barring ordination for clergy in gay partnerships. If hired, Olsen would be Norway’s first openly partnered male minister. The move triggers an emergency bishops meeting and a final government decision next month. Gay marriages are legal in Norway outside church rites.
