Transplant follows DeBakey heart support device implant
A 31 year old woman at The Methodist Hospital Houston underwent a three hour operation to replace the MicroMed DeBakey Ventricular Assist Device with a donor heart and remains in satisfactory condition in intensive care. The device had aided her heart since June 7 and is smaller than older pumps improving blood flow. Dr. George Noon, who helped DeBakey and NASA develop the device, removed it before the transplant. The pump has been used in 32 European patients since 1998 and FDA trials were approved recently.
