Tornado toll rises near Old Mines and Farmington

Five people died and more than thirty injured as tornadoes struck the Missouri mining belt southwest of St. Louis. Homes were demolished, families trapped, and roads blocked by fallen trees while power and telephone lines failed. Neighbor accounts recall an awful roar as storms barreled through Farmington and Old Mines.

Besieged Ben Het Camp Faces Fierce North Vietnamese Assault

In South Vietnam near Dak To, North Vietnamese forces attacked the Ben Het Special Forces camp and surrounding posts. U S artillery and air strikes pounded the area as 2,000 enemy troops pressed a siege lasting months. Casualties included eight U S soldiers wounded and civil irregulars harmed as the battle disrupted Route 579 and Northern assaults continued despite bombardment and aerial support. A separate Da Nang region clash reported an enemy hospital complex found near Quang Ngai City.
