Texas lawmakers push voting maps and teen sentencing rule
Texas lawmakers moved toward two main goals of the special session by passing district maps for the House Senate and Congress and adopting a new 40 year life in prison option for 17 year olds who commit capital crimes. The House approved the congressional maps with no change from 2012 while minor tweaks were made to their own districts. The Senate map was accepted as court drawn after suits. The bills head to Gov Perry before the deadline. The session also firmed up life in prison with the possibility of parole for 17 year olds who kill during another felony, with debate on whether 40 years is a life sentence and whether life without parole should be available for younger offenders.
