Ice Age Bison Fossil Found in Mojave Desert
Paleontologists uncover about one third of a 10,700 year old Ice Age bison skeleton in Red Rock Canyon State Park near Route 14. The site shows the Mojave was once cooler and wetter with pinyon juniper forests, lakes, and year round streams. The bones, dated by radiocarbon analysis, indicate the animal died long before modern times and differ from contemporary bison. The fossils will be studied at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County and moved to Los Angeles.
