Lattimore Barred From Leaving the United States
The Justice Department directed the State Department to bar Owen Lattimore from leaving the country amid pro-Communist charges. The State Department cited information from an official agency that Lattimore planned travel to Russia or Soviet satellites, with speculation pointing to the FBI or CIA. Lattimore denied plans to go to Russia and only mentioned possible leave actions like lecturing at the University of New Delhi or a trip to Europe, excluding Iron Curtain nations. Senator McCarthy highlighted the case to the Senate Internal Security subcommittee.
