New York anchor leaves NBC for time with dying father

John Johnson, 59, a prominent New York news anchor, quit a $750,000 yearly NBC job for nine months to care for his 82 year old father dying of lung cancer. He traveled 368 miles weekly from Manhattan to Long Island and later moved into a nearby hotel to be with him and share final moments. The emotional decision drew praise from colleagues and highlighted a bond that reshaped his view of life and career. The father, a hard working, stoic man who left a penniless upbringing, died April 20 after a life of family devotion and modest fame.
