Columbia Astronauts Begin Space Medical Tests on Orbit
Seven crew members of the shuttle Columbia entered a 16 to 17 day mission to study bone loss, sleep deprivation, muscle atrophy, and other space flight effects. Tests include cap mounted brain wave monitoring, isotopic calcium tracking, body fluid sampling, and muscle mass measurements. Rat studies at University of Florida supplement the work as NASA documents a blueprint for future long duration flights. A video camera in the cockpit will capture key moments of the mission.
