UTPB considers 54 credit admission rule in focus

Rep. Jay Gibson calls the 54 credit hour admission prerequisite for the University of Texas at the Permian Basin disappointing. An admin and faculty committee supported the plan, which would allow exceptions by a three person panel, with the condition that students complete 54 hours at a lower level before graduation. The measure advances to UT System regents for review and could take effect next fall.

An Army analysis of two years of desert war games at Fort Irwin California finds U S combat troops lacking in key go to war skills. The 45 page Sun report notes poor map reading ammunition waste and weak tank and anti tank gunnery, with 12682 rounds fired and 62 hits. The study covers October 1986 to November 1982 and cites security lapses and confusion in command.

Reagan opposes $859 billion budget plan in veto threat

President Reagan told Congress he will veto spending bills he deems excessive as conferees approve an $859 billion compromise. He argued the package raises taxes and fails to control spending while increasing domestic program funding and setting aside a contingency fund for recession relief.

Hundreds flee Colorado River flood alerts in Grand Junction

About 300 residents in Grand Junction Colorado prepared to evacuate as warnings warned an earthen dike near the Colorado River could fail. Downstream at Parker Strip in Arizona and California residents stacked sandbags and moved mobile homes to higher ground as the river rose nearly 2 feet on the first day of three days of water releases from dams in the region. Federal officials opened floodgates at three dams as reservoirs swelled from record snowmelt and spring rains. Hoover Dam north of Las Vegas is the northern dam, with Davis Dam about 60 miles south.
