Officials stymied as Mexican diesel smuggling grows

In Hidalgo Texas officials warn cheap Mexican diesel fuels high resale profits. Smugglers exploit subsidies from Pemex to sell across the Rio Grande at about 17 cents a gallon, far below U.S. prices. Cases involve waterbeds and cross border shipments. Texas loses millions in unpaid diesel taxes while federal rules apply. Authorities note organized rings and hobby smugglers, with storage and haulers forming a supply chain.
