Iraq Holds First Elections in 22 Years
Iraq conducted its first national assembly elections since 1958 with about six million people voting in Baghdad. Kurdish voters in the northeast also elected a 20 member council while security forces repelled a Thursday attack on the British Embassy. The vote occurred amid regional tensions with Iran and international interest in the Persian Gulf.

Clements denies appointees told to cut back
Gov. Bill Clements rejected claims that his board and commission appointments hinge on backing his push to cut state jobs. He defended selective cuts and denied threatening agency directors, noting some departments should not be reduced while employment totals show a 1500 position drop from May 1979 to May 1980.
