Savages cycle world trek despite perils and poverty
Barbara and Larry Savage of Santa Barbara rode 23 000 miles over two years from California to Egypt and beyond, facing 500 pound bear encounters in British Columbia, rattlesnakes in Idaho, alligators in Georgia swamplands, and hostile crowds in Egypt while marketably coping with hunger. They began May 14 1978 traveling through Canada, Spain, Morocco, Egypt, India and Asia, then via New Zealand and Tahiti returning to California. They spent about 17000 on the voyage and may write a book to fund future trips.

Networks press convention coverage in costly three network plan
Networks race to cover the 1980 Republican National Convention in Detroit spending about 30 million dollars from July 14 to 17. CBS NBC and ABC deploy nearly 2,000 personnel with 50 on the convention floor, while most expenses are not covered by ads. ABC aims to mix gavel to gavel coverage with specials. CBS and NBC keep traditional lines with Cronkite and Rather guiding floor crews.
