Texas spotted whiptail lizard in Texas parks and pages

The Texas spotted whiptail or gularis is a common Texas racerunner found statewide with a broad distribution. It inhabits arid to semi arid grasslands and rocky hillsides, favors sandy soils, and is often seen near homes and irrigation. Adults reach seven to nine inches, with seven or eight light lengthwise stripes on a tan brown back, a long tail up to 65 percent of body length, and blue black belly mottlings in males during breeding. They are omnivorous, active March to November, oviparous with two to six eggs per clutch, and hatch after about two months. They are wary and fast movers, observed in city parks and nature trails.
