Judge voids Haitian detention policy while keeping refugees in limbo
A federal judge nullified the detention policy that held 1910 Haitians and others in camps while asylum petitions proceed, ruling the policy was adopted procedurally defective. He refused to free detainees immediately and noted the ruling does not declare detention itself unlawful. A hearing set for next week will address future steps amid a government plan to release some detainees under sponsor arrangements.
