Maya Lin design wins national Vietnam memorial honor
Maya Ying Lin, a 21 year old Yale graduate, wins a 1420 entry competition for a Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund design. Her two granite walls form an oblique angle, inscribed with 57 692 names in order of death, creating a quiet contemplative park rather than a traditional monument. Lin aims to honor the dead and offer a place for living reflection.
