Remote telescope control cuts travel time in astronomy
In a landmark test, Michigan astronomer Dr. Robert Kirshner remotely operated the 84 inch telescope at Kitt Peak near Tucson from Ann Arbor. The demonstration shows remote observing can save time and money, allowing simultaneous worldwide research without constant on site presence. The system uses a monitor, phone link, and computer terminal to control the instrument and view spectra rather than full images.
