Polaris model gave Soviets blueprint details, Admiral says
Washington AP. Vice Admiral Hyman Rickover told a Joint Atomic Energy subcommittee that a $2.8 toy Polaris submarine model supplied the Soviet Union with millions of dollars worth of U.S. nuclear submarine information. He said the model, sold in dime stores, reflected ship dimensions, reactor compartment size, and crew needs, and blamed interservice rivalry for the leak. Rickover testified aboard the George Washington during a 1960 Polaris patrol. The Navy acknowledged it sometimes provides unclassified ship images to model makers but denied supplying Polaris blueprints to such firms.
