GOP Leaders Draft Trade Rescue Plan in Bid to Revive Bill
After talks with President Obama, House Speaker Boehner and Senate Leader McConnell weigh splitting the stalled trade bill into two parts. One would vote on future trade deals alone, the other renews aid for displaced workers and extends Caribbean Basin rules. No final decision announced. McConnell and Boehner seek fast track action before the July 4 break amid Democratic opposition and labor concerns. Pelosi plans to attend a fundraising event with Tom Steyer in San Francisco, highlighting intra party tensions over the measure.

OPM hacked as lawmakers fault neglected security
Washington staffers and officials tell Congress that the Office of Personnel Management repeatedly failed to adopt basic cybersecurity practices allowing breaches tied to China. The 4.2 million current and former employees had data stolen, with estimates up to 14 million including security clearance files and relatives’ information. Donna Seymour, CIO, said records go back to 1985 and contractors may be affected.

Army veteran sentenced to 17 months for White House breach
An Army veteran with mental health issues who crossed the White House fence and entered the East Room was sentenced to 17 months in prison. Judge Rosemary M. Collyer said the incident showed the White House is not always the secure place it is thought to be. The case followed security breaches that contributed to the resignation of Secret Service director Julia Pierson. Gonzalez, 43, had a knife, hundreds of rounds, a machete, knives and tomahawks in his car, and expressed a desire to warn the president that the atmosphere was collapsing. He will be transferred to California for supervision and ongoing mental health treatment after release.
