Stolen Social Security number used by dozens across states
Audra Schmierer, a San Francisco suburb resident, reveals her SSN has been used by at least 81 people in 17 states, many likely illegal immigrants seeking work. The case highlights lax verification by employers and limited action by agencies, with reform proposals pushing for national SSN verification and data sharing with immigration enforcement. Schmierer discovered the issue in 2005 after IRS sent a back taxes bill for $15,813 despite no work since 2000.
