Solar flares spark possible northern lights over the U S
NOAA reports two solar flares expected to disrupt Earth's magnetic field with auroras likely in polar regions and possibly visible as far south as northern United States. The first flare labeled X-3 originated in a large sunspot area, largest since 1957, covering 90 percent of the spot. The second flare, X-1, occurred in the sun's southeast portion as it rotated into view.
