Beer tax cut plan faces broad push in Congress
Jeff Becker of the Beer Institute cites a voter base of low and middle income drinkers as targets for tax relief. More than 150 congressmen back a bill to halve the beer tax to 1990 levels, despite skepticism about passage. MADD warns lower prices will raise youth alcohol use and traffic deaths, while industry notes a history of production declines after tax hikes. Restoring the tax would cut about 12.5 cents from a six pack, with microbreweries unaffected.
