Delays hit new Conrail owners in early operations
Delays and service problems plagued the new Conrail owners CSX and Norfolk Southern in their third week of operation. Late shipments disrupted production across Pennsylvania New Jersey New York Ohio and Indiana with UPS reporting three to 12 hour train delays on both lines. Ed Rastatter cautioned it is too early to declare an emergency.

Suspension reversed for fortune cookie message at school
In Hudson Ohio a 9 year old, Karl Bauman, was suspended for a fortune cookie line reading You will die with honor during a class assignment. The two day punishment is removed from his record after officials found no written notice as required by state law. His parents and the ACLU planned to appeal. Karl says the phrase was meant positively.

A three year trial of 7,705 postmenopausal women shows raloxifene lowers breast cancer risk by 76 percent versus placebo. Evista maker Eli Lilly funded the study led by Dr. Steven R. Cummings at UCSF, with cautious optimism about long term safety and benefits for bone health.
