Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko Visit New York
New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani and Governor Mario Cuomo welcomed Japan's Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko in Manhattan. They attended a Waldorf Astoria reception and Met Museum dinner marking their sixth day in an 11 city U S tour. The visit aims to project friendship amid trade tensions. The emperor plans meetings with U N Secretary General Boutros Boutros-Ghali, and demonstrations by Asian American groups urged an apology for wartime aggression. Akihito earlier toured Jefferson's Monticello and viewed a large garden, discussing slavery topics with Monticello Foundation director Dan Jordan.
