Disabled barred from ministry by Lutheran church
The American Lutheran Church council ruled that people with significant physical or mental handicaps cannot enter ordained ministry, citing mobility and stamina requirements for pastors. Disabilities listed include multiple sclerosis, quadriplegia, noncorrectable heart disorders, cystic fibrosis, arthritis, psychoses, and severe substance abuse. The policy, effective after legal review, targets pastors able to preach and lead under stress for a denomination of about 2.5 million members.
