Senate Workfare Proposal Expands Food Stamp Rules
The Senate Agriculture Committee voted 11 to 5 to require states to set up mandatory work programs for able bodied food stamp recipients by July 1 1983. The plan would affect about four million of 22 million recipients, aiming for federal savings and continued eligibility only if recipients work or search for work. It exempts the young, elderly, disabled, and single parents with young children, while testing the approach in 12 areas.
