Battle of Mansfield ends Union invasion attempt into Texas
In April 1864 Confederates under Maj. Gen. Richard Taylor halted a 40,000 strong Union force led by Gen. Nathaniel Banks at Mansfield Sabine Crossroads. Despite heavy losses and 2,500 captured troops, Banks retreated to Pleasant Hill as Taylor fought a costly rearguard action with Texans and veterans from San Jacinto. The engagement, noted for Clark and Houston's feud, marked the last invasion threat to Texas.
