Medicine from space tested on animals on Earth
A pure medicine created on a space shuttle flight in April is now being tested on animals as a first step toward human trials by 1988 or early 1989. The drug, possibly urokinase or interleukin, is produced in zero gravity to achieve purity and quantity unseen on Earth. Ortho Pharmaceutical and Johnson & Johnson lead animal tests in New Jersey, with broader industry and government interest noted. Senator Jake Garn urged that success would justify the space program.
