Alateen: Sharing, Serenity, and Self Discovery in Odessa

The Odessa Alateen group meets weekly at 2433 E 11th St with silence, the Serenity Prayer, and shared feelings. Marla, a sponsor, explains the program helps teens cope with family drinking, teaches self love, and emphasizes anonymity and not changing the alcoholic. A 15-year-old member recalls joining after her mother’s sobriety began, learning that the problem is familial. The program centers on 12 steps, personal inventory, spiritual resources, and the belief that one must not try to cure others but can improve themselves and support loved ones.

Study on vulnerability to fail shows long term risk patterns

Newhouse News Service reports on the New York Longitudinal Study tracking 133 children from infancy to adulthood. At age 3 Michael showed high risk factors for lifelong personality problems, yet at 22 he now functions well with school, work, and social life. Bernice, another participant, faced adolescence turmoil and later self-reliance but seeks therapy to achieve lasting relationships. The research suggests vulnerability is shaped by tailored care rather than environment alone.
