Navy develops faster, reconfigurable Littoral Combat Ship
The Navy unveils a new class of faster, maneuverable ships powered by waterjets to chase speedboats and terrorists near shore. LCS designs feature removable mission packages, a core crew of 40, and two main variants from Lockheed Martin and Bath Iron Works. Costs run around 350 million dollars per vessel, with plans to build 55 units and boost fleet numbers from 287 toward 313 ships.
