Tobacco use rise could fail to offset 1981 crop drop
The Agriculture Department says rising demand for U S tobacco mainly from exports will not offset 1981's 2.07 billion pound harvest. Consumption may rise to 1.86 billion pounds, exports could fall next year, and 1982 plantings show a 10 percent cut to about 1.86 billion pounds. Domestic use and exports influence carryover stocks and prices despite a smaller crop.

Grain elevator operators face stricter financial standards
Washington AP The Agriculture Department imposes tougher asset tests and annual audited statements on about 2,000 federally licensed and 4,500 nonlicensed grain storage operators. Effective next month the standards aim to shield farmers from bankruptcies by enabling preemptive withdrawal of storage approvals when insolvency looms, affecting 85 percent of off farm storage capacity.
