Baptist Publication Dispute Brews at Southern Baptist Meet
FAHILAND Ore AP The Southern Baptist Convention opened its 116th annual meeting amid a brewing dispute over the Broadman Bible Commentary. Delegates debated banning or rewriting the 12 volume work published by Broadman Publishing House. Some conservatives formed the Baptist Faith and Message Fellowship to push within the convention against liberalism. The debate centers on whether the Bible is infallible and how to interpret discrepancies in the text. The convention began after pre-meeting gatherings of pastors and women’s groups.
