Congress to probe bid to seize tidelands title
Senate Judiciary Chair Pat McCarran will summon Interior Secretary Oscar Chapman Attorney General James McGranery and GSA head Jess Larson to testify on charges the administration plans to seize submerged tidelands as surplus property and lease them under the 1949 Federal Property Act. Florida Senator Holland said Chapman aims to grab the lands amid a vetoed states rights bill and a Supreme Court ruling. Wyoming Senator O Mahoney defended the government saying no definite plans exist though he warned against using the 1949 law. The debate followed Holland’s veto assertion and O Mahoney’s revised plan to keep federal title for five years while states seek revenue shares.
