Kinkel to argue mental illness defense in high school shooting trial
Kip Kinkel, 16, faces an adult trial on September 27 for the May 1998 killings of his parents and the following day’s attack at Thurston High School in Springfield. Lawyers plan three theories claiming mental disease or defect or extreme emotional disturbance could negate criminal intent or reduce charges, avoiding the death penalty due to his age at the time.
