Derby Day Triumph for Velazquez on Animal Kingdom
Jockey John Velazquez rode Animal Kingdom to victory in the 137th Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs after Robby Albarado broke his nose. The 20-1 long shot led a disciplined, midpack ride to beat Nehro and Mucho Macho Man, paying $43.80, $19.60, and $13. The win came despite initial plans to ride Uncle Mo and marked Velazquez's first Derby win after years of close calls.

Napravnik Makes Derby History With Ninth Place Finish
Rosie Napravnik, 23, achieved the highest finish by a female rider in the Kentucky Derby as Pants On Fire finished ninth in a field of 19. Although she didn’t win, Napravnik surpassed Patricia Cooksey and Julie Krone for the best prior by a woman in the Derby, while trainer Kathy Ritvo celebrated Mucho Macho Man finishing third. Nehro also placed second after a late rally, and Comma to the Top sustained a chip fracture ending his race and sidelining him for 60 days.
