Vinegaroon a harmless whipscorpion of West Texas
Michael Price notes that the vinegaroon Mastigoproctus gigantus inhabits Trans-Pecos deserts in Texas and Mexico. The harmless arachnid resembles a scorpion but lacks a sting, uses a vinegar-scented spray for defense, and reaches 2 to 3 inches with a 3 inch tail. It hides under rocks, is nocturnal, and breeds with 20 to 30 eggs per sac.
