Hispanics surge as Katrina Rita evacuee region shifts
Government estimates show about 450,000 people left the Gulf Coast after Katrina and Rita, with Hispanics moving in by tens of thousands. Orleans Parish lost 279,000 residents and St Bernard Parish 61,000, while Houston's Harris County gained about 93,000. Data reflect households only, excluding shelter residents, and offer a snapshot of displacement and new arrivals four months after the storms.

Immigrant views tied to national trends and New Orleans shifts
The AP Ipsos poll questions whether immigration influence is good or bad as overall sentiment rises. Food stamp usage increases are noted. In New Orleans average incomes rose 16 percent partly due to departures of the poorest residents. The black population in the New Orleans metro fell from 37 percent to 22 percent while whites rose from 60 to 73 percent of the remaining population. The Census Bureau could not provide city level race or socio-economic data due to insufficient survey responses.
