Divers recover 5000 pound Monitor propeller and shaft
Navy divers raise the 5000 pound propeller and drive shaft from the sunken Civil War ironclad Monitor. The four blade propeller about nine feet in diameter is the largest recovered item. The site lies 16 miles off Cape Hatteras in 230 feet of water on the Atlantic edge near the Gulf Stream. Researchers plan a potential 20 million dollar recovery effort in 1999 or 2000.
