Productivity rises in first quarter of 2003

The Labor Department reports productivity up 1.9 percent annual rate from January to March 2003 as output grows while hours shrink. The Dow climbs 116 points to close above 9,000 for the first time in 10 months, with employment slipping and unemployment expected to rise.

Pentagon official denies manipulating Iraq war intelligence

Pentagon officials defended their Iraq WMD and al Qaida links assessments on Wednesday denying any effort to tailor evidence for war. Douglas Feith said a small analyst group, formed in October 2001, reviewed existing intelligence to gain fresh insights for global terrorism strategy, not to push for invasion. He and William Luti stressed the analysts were separate from Luti’s later Special Plans unit and from a prior DIA defector debriefing program. Congressional questions linger over whether intelligence was flawed or manipulated to justify invasion, especially with no WMD found.

Senate votes against canceling 2005 base closings

The Senate rejected suspending the 2005 round of base closings in a 53 to 42 vote amid Bush administration opposition while approving full retirement pay for disabled veterans. Senators Dorgan and Lott argued for delay, while Warner and Levin urged saving funds to bolster the military. Pentagon sought a large upcoming closure round to follow past eliminations of 97 bases.
