Researchers advise moving bug zappers away from picnics
CHICAGO AP Researchers warn that electric bug zappers should be kept away from food areas. Microbiologist James Urban of Kansas State University says zappers can spread bacteria or viruses up to six feet, especially near condiment trays or children's toys. Urban and entomologist Alberto Bruce presented findings at the American Society for Microbiology. They exposed flies to microorganisms and found a zapper could spread about one in 4,000 viruses or bacteria carried by a fly.
