Shultz backs high level talks with Palestinian Jordanian group

Secretary of State Shultz said he hopes to convene a high level meeting fairly soon with a Palestinian Jordanian delegation as a precursor to Mideast peace talks. He would include Palestine National Council members who are not PLO and are deemed of goodwill, led by Richard Murphy. Hussein urged PLO participation and a broader, international framework, but Shultz warned against an international conference and pressed for direct PLO statements and negotiations. The discussion also touched on Soviet opposition and the need for tangible negotiations rather than conferences.
