Chemotherapy offers no benefit for certain breast cancer patients
A Tuesday study finds chemotherapy yields no added advantage for post-menopausal women with hormone sensitive breast cancer. The report compares outcomes for patients disease free five years after treatment who received chemotherapy followed by Tamoxifen versus Tamoxifen alone and notes differences by estrogen sensitivity.
Chemo may be unnecessary for some ER positive breast cancer
A large study finds women with breast cancer that has not spread to lymph nodes may avoid chemotherapy after surgery if their tumors are estrogen receptor positive, using tamoxifen alone to protect against recurrence. ER negative patients still gain from chemo followed by tamoxifen, while ER positive patients showed no added benefit from chemotherapy.
