San Francisco considers taps for bottled water curb

San Francisco Supervisor David Chiu proposes an ordinance to require bottle filling taps at fountains, aiming to reduce plastic bottle waste. The plan draws support from environmental groups but faces skepticism from business interests and concerns about added costs and hygiene. University trials show taps replace thousands of bottles monthly, while officials note city departments already ban bottled water since 2007. The measure, introduced June 26, awaits committee review in September before full board action.

Gov Susana Martinez announced final site selection for the CITE project stating the New Mexico site will host a billion-dollar, no-residents town modeled after Rock Hill. The plan aims to test intelligent traffic, wireless networks, and automated systems on existing infrastructure with researchers piloting self-driving car tests. Brumley said land acquisition delays do not halt design and lab development, and Las Cruces or Hobbs remain in consideration.
