Extensive Land Damage Seen By Soil Agency
The Soil Conservation Service reports that by June 1 about 2.356 million acres in the Great Plains had been damaged since November 1, up 90,000 acres from a month earlier. In June 1, 1959, the total was 3.132 million acres. About 60 percent lay in Colorado, Kansas, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas, with Texas and Montana housing nearly two thirds of the damage. Wind erosion land in blow condition fell to 5.749 million acres from 8.416 million on May 1. The service noted lower 1959-60 season damage than in any of the previous five years, aided by generally favorable moisture, despite bad moisture in parts of eastern Wyoming, eastern New Mexico and the Texas High Plains during April and May. Several damaging windstorms in February and April drove most of the season's damage, while 220,000 acres of growing crops were destroyed this season, about half in Kansas and Nebraska.
